Rails are precision-rolled sections designed to support and guide wheel loads. Manufactured to strict tolerances using high-carbon or alloy steels, they must resist rolling contact fatigue, wear and impact over millions of load cycles. Common profiles include flat bottom (UIC 60, UIC 54), grooved (tram rails) and crane rails. Rails are heat-treated or head-hardened to improve wear resistance, and are typically installed on sleepers/ties with resilient fastenings to damp vibrations.
